Varshika Shraddha is an important Hindu samskara that connects the living with their ancestors. This annual ceremony is performed on the same Thithi as the individual’s passing, and it helps ensure the soul’s peace, liberation from earthly attachments, and safe transition to higher realms.
During the ritual, the family offers pinda (rice balls), tilodaka (sesame water), prayers, and food to the priests. These offerings are believed to nourish the departed soul and strengthen ancestral blessings for the family. Vedic mantras are chanted to remove karmic blockages, ancestral grievances, and negative energies that may affect the lineage.
The ceremony purifies the family’s karma, deepens spiritual connection, and brings blessings of health, harmony, prosperity, and protection.
Varshika Shraddha, also known as the Annual Death Ceremony, is a sacred ritual performed to honor one’s ancestors on their death anniversary as per the Hindu lunar calendar. This ceremony expresses gratitude, seeks blessings, and ensures the peaceful journey of the departed soul in the afterlife.
The ritual includes offering pinda, sesame seeds, water, and prayers, which nourish and elevate the soul. Two priests traditionally perform the ceremony and are served lunch as part of the rituals.
Additionally, during the first year after death, families also perform 16 Masika Shraddhas, culminating in Varshika Shraddha.
